The National Endowment for the Humanities has announced that Henry Louis Gates, Jr. will be the 2002 Jefferson Day Lecturer. Professor Gates is W.E.B. DuBois Professor of Humanities at Harvard University where he also serves as chair of the Afro-American studies department.

SBL is one of the 20 learned societies and organizations that co-sponsor Jefferson Day. This year's lecture will take place on Friday March 22, 7:30pm at the Ronald Reagan Building Atrium, 1300 Pennsylvania Avenue N.W.

Although the event is free, seating is limited and advance reservations are required. Tickets should be requested from the NEH Public Information Office (tel: 202/606-8446).
