This year's Annual Meeting in Washington D.C. provides a unique opportunity for Society members to communicate directly with Congress about the importance of federal funding for biblical studies and other fields within the humanities.

On Monday morning, November 20, SBL and AAR members (U.S. citizens only) will meet with Congressional staff in small delegations on Capitol Hill to encourage federal funding. Scholars who have participated in such meetings in the past invariably find them worthwhile-an exercise in the democratic process. Members must attend the mandatory orientation session on Sunday evening and must have registered by September 30.

The National Endowment for the Humanities and other government programs have underwritten scores of projects by individual biblical scholars and their institutions. If this federal support is to continue and increase, Society members must advocate for their discipline.
