"It is one of life's greatest ironies," writes educational theorist Michael Fullan, that "schools are in the business of teaching and learning, yet they are terrible at learning from each other" (Leading in a Culture of Change [San Francisco: Jossey-Bass, 2001], 92-93). The same could be said of college and seminary professors. We are in the business of sharing knowledge, but we are not very good at sharing knowledge with each other—at least when it comes to practical pedagogical knowledge. The August edition of SBL Forum focuses on pedagogy and provides the opportunity to highlight valuable resources related to the teaching of the Bible in academic contexts. This fall SBL will publish a volume that capitalizes on the willingness of colleagues to share their knowledge and experience with the rest of the guild. Teaching the Bible: Practical Strategies for Classroom Instruction, (Resources for Biblical Studies Series), is an eclectic compendium written from a wide range of methodological, theological, and ideological perspectives. It features the contributions of nearly one hundred scholar-teachers from the United States, Great Britain, Canada, Australia, and South Africa. The purpose of this volume is to make available to those who teach biblical studies a large repertoire of effective classroom strategies for approaching specific topics in the field.
