Early Exegesis of Genesis 1–3

Program Unit Type: Seminar
Accepting Papers? Yes

Call For Papers: In 2019, we will have three sessions: 1. joined session with the seminar "Contextualizing North African Theology" that focuses upon the interpretation of Gen. 1-3 in the North African context in the fourth and fifth century. Proposals that deal with Gen. 1-3 in Latin Manichaeism and in Augustine are welcome. Among others, the interpretation of light and darkness, the understanding of humans as created in God's image, and the idea and impact of original sin are topics that could be addressed. 2. a session about Gen. 1-3 in Greek catenae and (dogmatic, ascetic etc.) collections from the 4th century onwards. Contributions to individual manuscripts, the problems of types of catenae or the history of collections can be addressed. The intentions of collectors and catenists and their context should be taken into consideration. 3. a joined session with the "Nag Hammadi and Gnosticism" seminar that will address the topic of ancient exegesis of Genesis 1-3. Papers e.g. on the importance of Gen. 1-3 for the development of Gnosticism or the method of (counter)exegesis for Gnostic of Gen. 1-3 texts are welcome. Although this session will feature invited speakers, scholars (junior scholars in particular) are invited to submit abstract proposals to be included in the session.
