Early Christianity and the Ancient Economy

Program Unit Type: Section
Accepting Papers? Yes

Call For Papers: The Early Christianity and Ancient Economy program examines three broad areas of interest: The first area involves a study of all the major aspects of the economy in the ancient world, especially the Roman Empire. The second examines first-century early Christianity both in relationship to the ancient economy and in regard to its own economic aspects. The third area does the same for Christianity in the second to the fifth centuries. Both synchronic and diachronic studies are encouraged, as are contributions focused on specific issues (such as money, texts, authors, themes, and events). The unit welcomes papers addressing the economy in its broadest sense, including both mercantile and extramercantile transactions. Paper proposals for all three areas of interest are welcomed, especially those that make use of papyri, inscriptions, and other realia. For the 2019 annual meeting, papers that focus on credit, debt, loans, and loan forgiveness are also particularly welcome.
