LGBTI/Queer Hermeneutics
Program Unit Type: Section
Accepting Papers? Yes
Call For Papers: The LGBTI/Queer Hermeneutics Section invites papers to be organized in the three following sessions:
The FIRST SESSION welcomes papers on trans readings of biblical texts (in the broadest sense of both of the terms "trans" and "readings"). We are, for instance, interested in proposals that discuss how trans studies informs an approach to these texts, or a particular pericope, AND/OR those that stage an encounter, exchange, or engagement between ideas and experiences of trans and of biblical, demonstrating what these do to, with, or for contemporary understandings of biblical texts (or a particular pericope).
We welcome proposals from individuals across the gender spectrum, including transgender, gender nonconforming, cisgender, and other gender identities.
The SECOND SESSION is a collaboration with the Archaeology of Religion in the Roman World section on the theme of What’s the “Matter” with Gender and Sexuality in the Roman World? While not as prominent as Roman “family values," diverse sexualities and genders were traced on and through objects (e.g. graffiti and terracotta erotica). In this session, inspired by the work of Sarah Levin-Richardson, we invite papers that explore how ancient sexualities and genders, especially those we might identify as “queer,” are represented in and created by the ancient material world and how these shed light on our understanding of biblical texts, traditions, and interpretations. Authors might consider ancient spaces (e.g. brothels, villas), things (e.g. tintinnabulum, amulets), and/or representations of things and acts (e.g. painting, statuary). Papers that engage theoretical discussions of the material world and queer theory are especially welcome.
The THIRD session is an open session, welcoming papers on any topics related to LGBTI/Queer biblical hermeneutics.
Questions or further inquiries about these sessions can be directed to the chair, Joseph Marchal, at josephamarchal@gmail.com.
