Call For Papers: The Matthew Section is seeking proposals on Matthean topics for the 2019 Annual Meeting in San Diego. We will hold three sessions at this meeting. Two of these will be invited sessions. The first is dedicated to feminist and gender studies, both as applied to the narrative world of Matthew’s Gospel, and, comparatively, against the background of Pauline writings. The second is co-hosted with Bible in Ancient and Modern Media (BAMM). This session will focus on the work of Marcel Jousse and its implications for gospel studies, especially the issue of orality and memory against the background of form criticism. The third session is open to any topic in Matthean studies. Submissions will be evaluated based on the originality and clarity of the thesis proposed, control of current and classic scholarship (author: year), quality and clarity of supporting evidence, and the overall contribution that it makes to the field of scholarship and to the vision of SBL Matthew to present the best in Matthean scholarship. Please note that proposals lacking a clear thesis and explicit references to the scholarly context of the proposed paper will not be considered. (Ideally, abstracts should be less than 300 words).
