Recovering Female Interpreters of the Bible

Program Unit Type: Section
Accepting Papers? Yes

Call For Papers: Session 1) "Women Interpreters Through the Ages." We invite proposals for papers on female biblical interpreters preferably before the twentieth century. Papers may deal with a specific female interpreter or may compare several historical women's interpretations of a specific biblical text or theme. Session 2) "Female Biblical Interpreters and Internationalization." Margaret McFadden’s book, Golden Cables of Sympathy: The Transatlantic Sources of Nineteenth-Century Feminism (2009), has revealed the global and international nature of the feminist movement. This session will explore early female interpreters in their global context and their international networks of communication and exchange. Examples of the international nature of the feminist movement and its intersection with women’s interpretation include the impact of Phoebe Palmer’s writings on Catherine Booth, the Pauline interpretation of Icelandic suffragist Briet Bjarnhedinsdottir (1850-1940) and the biblical translation and activism of Indian women’s rights advocate Pandita Ramabai (1858-1922).
