Place, Space, and Identity in the Ancient Mediterranean World

Program Unit Type: Consultation
Accepting Papers? Yes

Call For Papers: We plan two sessions that both combine invited papers and an open call. The first session entitled "Space and Gender in Ancient Texts and Cultures" welcomes papers that address gender issues related to space in biblical texts and/or their ancient contexts, for instance the question of gender hierarchies mediated through space or the issue of spatial setting of gender-specific roles. The second session on "Sacred Space and the Formation of Identity" invites papers on biblical and non-biblical accounts of sanctuaries and temple building or archeological/epigraphic sources and their function or significance for identity formation.
