Apocrypha and Pseudepigrapha

Program Unit Type: Section
Accepting Papers? Yes

Call For Papers: The Apocrypha and Pseudepigrapha Section welcomes proposals for an open session and also for two sessions that concern particular themes. 1) "Embodiment and the Construction of Identity.” Since apocryphal and pseudepigraphal texts often deal with complex or changing identities, this session pertains to literary examples where embodiment suggests, indicates, or claims a certain identity (whether, for example, religious, national, or social). Human beings have always used their bodies to express, visualize, construct, or even negotiate who they are or wish to be. Thus, “embodiment” can refer broadly to any element of physical existence such as changes inscribed in the body, bodily reactions, conformity to social norms relating to the body, clothing, food, or housing, for example. For this session, we encourage your proposals that address embodiment, identity and the interplay between the two in apocryphal, pseudepigraphal, or cognate texts. 2)"Apocrypha and the Dead Sea Scrolls." We are hosting a joint session with the Qumran and the Dead Sea Scrolls section for which we seek papers that explore any aspect of the Apocrypha in the traditional sense (the seven Deuterocanonicals such as Tobit and ben Sira) or as more broadly defined to show how these texts illumine the community at Qumran or writings of the Dead Sea Scrolls. Papers might also consider the nature of authoritative texts and issues pertaining to canon in light of Apocrypha that have been found among the Scrolls.
