SBL Press: Updated Open-Access Policy

SBL Press publishes research for our members in various formats (JBL, RBL, twenty-three book series), including two open-access book series, Ancient Near East Monographs and International Voices in Biblical Studies; an open-access journal, TC: A Journal of Biblical Textual Criticism; and the Society’s Bible Odyssey website. That said, we are continuously exploring ways to make our resources more widely accessible. To that end, SBL Press has updated its Open-Access Policy for SBL-published articles, reviews, and essays. Updates include expanded posting venues, options for reduced embargo periods, and changes to the form that a piece can be posted in. These changes are designed to ensure that work posted online represents the author’s best and final version and to provide more exposure, especially for adjunct and independent scholars, in venues that have been proven effective for promoting scholars’ research and writing. For details, see here.

New from SBL Press

Tangled Roots: The Emergence of Israeli Culture
Israel Bartal

In this new book Israel Bartal traces the history of modern Hebrew culture prior to the emergence of political Zionism. Bartal examines how traditional and modernist ideals and Western and non-European cultures merged in an unprecedented encounter between an ancient land (Israel) and a multigenerational people (the Jews). As this new Hebrew culture was taking shape, the memory of the recent European past played a highly influential role in shaping the image of the New Hebrew, that mythological hero who was meant to supplant the East European exilic Jew.
