Reminder to Review SBL’s Policy on the Scholarly Presentation and Publication of Ancient Artifacts

In September of 2016, the SBL Council adopted a policy on the Scholarly Presentation and Publication of Ancient Artifacts. Members of the Society of Biblical Literature regularly encounter important scholarly and ethical issues related to the authenticity and provenance of ancient artifacts. Such artifacts include, but are not limited to, archaeological objects and ancient texts—including papyri, inscriptions, cuneiform tablets, and codices. The SBL policy is intended to provide guidance for members and to articulate the Society's position on these matters. Such policies help preserve cultural heritage and support practices that discourage the illegal antiquities trade. We encourage members to review the SBL policy here. It applies to SBL program session presentations at Annual, International, and Regional Meetings, and books and serials published by SBL Press.

As a reminder, too, please note a number of sessions planned for the 2017 Annual Meeting in Boston with themes that concern artifacts and provenience:

  • S19-140: Public Scholarship in the New Media
  • S20-136: Provenience and Policy
  • S20-322: Hebrew Bible, History, and Archaeology
  • S20-204a: Avoiding Deception: Forgeries, Fake News, and Unprovenanced Material in Religious Studies
  • S20-246: Use, Influence, and Impact of the Bible

Pedagogy in Ancient Judaism and Early Christianity
Karina Martin Hogan, Matthew Goff, Emma Wasserman, editors

There is little direct evidence for formal education in the Bible and in the texts of Second Temple Judaism and early Christianity. At the same time, pedagogy and character formation are important themes in many of these texts. This book explores the pedagogical purpose of wisdom literature, in which the concept of discipline (Hebrew musar) is closely tied to the acquisition of wisdom. It examines how and why the concept of musar came to be translated as paideia (education, enculturation) in the Septuagint and how the concept of paideia was deployed by ancient Jewish authors writing in Greek.

Early Jewish Writings
Eileen Schuller and Marie-Theres Wacker, editors

This collection of essays deals with aspects of women and gender relations in early Judaism (during the Persian, Greek and Roman Empires). Some essays focus on specific writings: the Greek (Septuagint) version of Esther, Judith, Joseph and Aseneth, and the Letter of Jeremiah. Others explore how certain biblical texts and characters, such as Eve, the sons of God and daughters of men, and the Egyptian princess at Moses’s birth, were reinterpreted in later writings, including Josephus’s history. A third group of essays explores specific social contexts: Philo’s views of women in the Roman Empire, the sectarian Dead Sea Scrolls, and women philosophers of the Therapeutae in Egyptian Alexandria.

Friendship and Benefaction in James
Alicia J. Batten

Employing social description, social-scientific models, and rhetorical analysis, Alicia J. Batten argues that the Letter of James is conversant with the topic of friendship within Greek and Roman literature, as well as within various texts of early Christianity. She illustrates how James drew upon some of the language and concepts related to friendship with an intriguing density to advocate resistance to wealth, avoidance of rich patrons, and reliance upon God.
