KUDOS Emanuel Tov, J.L. Magnes Professor of Bible emeritus, Hebrew University, Jerusalem has been elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, one of the nation’s oldest and most prestigious honorary societies and a leading center for independent policy research.The honorees will be inducted at a ceremony on October 7, 2017, in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Reminder to Review SBL’s Policy on the Scholarly Presentation and Publication of Ancient Artifacts In September of 2016, the SBL Council adopted a policy on the Scholarly Presentation and Publication of Ancient Artifacts. Members of the Society of Biblical Literature regularly encounter important scholarly and ethical issues related to the authenticity and provenance of ancient artifacts. Such artifacts include, but are not limited to, archaeological objects and ancient texts—including papyri, inscriptions, cuneiform tablets, and codices. The SBL policy is intended to provide guidance for members and to articulate the Society's position on these matters. Such policies help preserve cultural heritage and support practices that discourage the illegal antiquities trade. We encourage members to review the SBL policy here. It applies to SBL program session presentations at Annual, International, and Regional Meetings, and books and serials published by SBL Press. As a reminder, too, please note a number of sessions planned for the 2017 Annual Meeting in Boston with themes that concern artifacts and provenience:
Dr. Edwina Murphy (Morling College, Sydney) Announced as the Winner of the 2017 SBL– De Gruyter Prize for Biblical Studies and Reception History
In partnership with the Society of Biblical Literature, De Gruyter is delighted to announce Dr. Edwina Murphy as the winner of this year’s SBL–De Gruyter Prize for Biblical Studies and Reception History. Murphy’s manuscript, “Cyprian’s Use of Paul,” was selected as the 2017 winner by the prize committee. A De Gruyter Award Reception will take place at the upcoming SBL-AAR Annual Meetings in Boston.
Pedagogy in Ancient Judaism and Early Christianity There is little direct evidence for formal education in the Bible and in the texts of Second Temple Judaism and early Christianity. At the same time, pedagogy and character formation are important themes in many of these texts. This book explores the pedagogical purpose of wisdom literature, in which the concept of discipline (Hebrew musar) is closely tied to the acquisition of wisdom. It examines how and why the concept of musar came to be translated as paideia (education, enculturation) in the Septuagint and how the concept of paideia was deployed by ancient Jewish authors writing in Greek.
