We have plans for many types of multimedia for this site and continue to look for the most economical way to cover the cost. If you are a biblical scholar and have created a timeline we would love to hear from you if you are willing to give SBL permission to use it on the Bible Odyssey site. Please email the managing editor with a description. If you log into the site and check the Bible Odyssey News page, you will see the initial subject list.

SBL Members Sylabi Collection

Most SBL members teach the Bible, in public universities, seminaries, colleges, and private schools. They contributed their syllabi to this collection so new teachers can find a place to get ideas for creating their first syllabi and continuing teachers can find inspiration for revising their existing syllabi. We have several sections that need syllabi and we particularly invite submissions from non-North American teachers so we can get a good mix of styles and methods. Meeting News

Regional Meetings
SBL members are meeting throughout the U.S. If you have not attended a regional meeting, you should check out the sessions and events occurring at the several meetings. More information on the location of these meetings, which occur from February through May each year, is listed online. Regional meetings provide further opportunities to SBL members who seek to present their research, want to share with and learn from colleagues from other institutions, and hope to extend their network of contacts within the academy.

SBL International Meeting
The Universiteit van Amsterdam will host the 2012 SBL International Meeting July 22-26, as well as the 2012 annual conference of the European Association of Biblical Studies (EABS) and the triennial joint meeting of the Oudtestamentish Werkgezelschap in Nederland en België (OTW) and the Society for Old Testament Study (SOTS). If you are scheduled to present at the meeting, please note that all meeting participants must be registered by May 1. Registration will be checked and those not registered will be removed from the program. Registration is available online for SBL, EABS, OTW, and SOTS members.

SBL Annual Meeting
The response to the Annual Meeting call for papers has been excellent! Preliminary figures suggest strong participation. If you submitted a paper and it has been accepted, register now to take advantage of Super Saver registration rates through April 15. In addition, please note:

• All meeting participants must be registered by June 1. Registration will be checked and those not registered will be removed from the program.
  
  
• SBL Membership is required at the time of a proposal for the SBL program and at the time of the Annual Meeting. Check your membership expiration date by logging into the website with your SBL ID. If your membership expires before the Annual Meeting, you may be removed from the program or omitted from a printed program.

SBL Travel Grants Program Applications for SBL Travel Grants have been received and are being reviewed. The SBL Travel Grants offer opportunities to current SBL members to attend the Annual Meeting, participate in the program, enhance their professional development, and build their network with fellow scholars. These grants help facilitate the work of Program Units, the International Cooperation Initiative ("ICI"), the Status of Women in the Profession Committee, the Underrepresented Racial and Ethnic Minorities in the Profession Committee, and other SBL Committees representing scholars in the field. These grants are intended to support underrepresented and underresourced scholars. The grants reimburse transportation, hotel accommodations, and other expenses incurred for the Annual Meeting.

Subscriptions
The Journal of Biblical Literature is the flagship journal of the field. It is published quarterly and includes scholarly articles and critical notes by members of the Society. Essential reading for over a century, it is now available online and in print. We are preparing to send the first issue of 2012 and it will be mailed soon.

3/30 - 4/1	2012 European Association of Biblical Studies Graduate Symposium Hamburg, Germany The event will bring together PhD candidates and post doctoral researchers from a variety of subfields relating to biblical studies. As always, senior scholars will attend the event. In 2012, EABS president Jorunn Økland (University of Oslo) and Dr Diana Edelman (University of Sheffield) are going to attend. There will be a joint session with graduate students from the University of Alberta, organised with Professor Ehud Ben Zvi. The format of the event is a small, residential gathering, which will allow for extended discussion, networking, and in-depth feedback. Graduates are invited to present a paper, run a workshop session, lead a round-table discussion or use any other format they see fit to present their topic. More information

4/15	Jewish Culture in the Ancient World Application Deadline Call for Applications: The research program "Jewish Culture in the Ancient World", founded by the Humanities Fund, Yad Hanadiv and the Israel Council of Higher Education, is pleased to call for applications for its final year of activity (2012/13). The program is running at Haifa, Tel-Aviv and Bar-Ilan Universities. Students accepted to this program will enroll in one of the universities, under the supervision of one of the program members. 4/15-4/16	Betrayal of The Humanities:The University During the Third Reich An international symposium at the University of Minnesota, co-organized by Bernard Levinson, Berman Family Chair in Jewish Studies and Hebrew Bible, and Bruno Chaouat, director of the Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies, will explore the mutation of academic ideals under National Socialism, when the German university system promoted Nazi ideology and helped the state eliminate its diverse community. 5/25- 5/27	The Other Temples First Annual Conference of Hekhal: The Irish Society for the Study of the Ancient Near East Hekhal is an academic association established by four graduates and postgraduates of Trinity College Dublin. The society's primary aim is to facilitate rigorous research in Ireland in the fields of Biblical Studies, Classical and Ancient Near Eastern Studies, Archaeology and Historiography, towards a more comprehensive understanding of the Biblical and Ancient Near Eastern worlds and their texts. The role of the temple cult is extremely important for Judaism despite Deuteronomic centralisation never being fully realised. As such, other Jewish temples may offer a fruitful area for discussing the development of Judaism in the Ancient Near East. We are therefore calling for papers dealing with temple ideology and its material culture in the context of temples other than the one in Jerusalem, whether those be real ones such as Elephantine, Leontopolis or Gerizim, or conceptual ones like the Qumran Yahad or the new Jerusalem in Revelation. The committee would hope to receive submissions on topics as diverse as diaspora Judaism, early Christianity, Qumran, early Samaritan studies, and any other historiographic and/or archaeological fields of research referencing these paradigms. 5/28- 5/31	Prophecy and Politics in Ancient Israel and in Ancient Cultures The Department of Biblical Studies at the University of Haifa is holding an international conference to examine the biblical prophets and prophecy in ancient cultures in general—within the geographical compass of Mesopotamia, Egypt and the Levant—from the beginnings of writing until the first century CE. The focus will be on the attitudes of ancient writers and readers to political-historical events. A one day excursion is planned: In the footsteps of Elijah, Elisha and the necromancer of En-Dor. 5/31 – 6/3	Conference on "The Christian Moses" The Catholic University of America's Center for the Study of Early Christianity will host a conference in Washington DC on the topic of the "Christian Moses." Speakers will investigate how early Christians (to the seventh century CE) used traditions associated with Moses, along with significant Jewish traditions and early Islamic references to Moses. The conference will have a single-session format to encourage maximum interaction among all participants: speakers, local and visiting scholars, and graduate students. 6/27- 6/30	Orality and Literacy in the Ancient World X: Tradition, Transmission, and Adaptation The University of Michigan, Ann Arbor This iteration of the biennial conference on Orality and Literacy will consider the differences between oral and written transmissions, as well as their interactions. When knowledge crosses cultural and linguistic boundaries, does it matter whether it is transmitted orally or in writing? Are written texts always less fluid than oral performances? How should we think about the different kinds of writing as methods of transmitting information, from the wax tablet to the monumental inscription? The conference will include an excursion to Detroit and a session introducing Anishinaabemowin (Ojibwe) oral tradition, and an opportunity to visit the University of Michigan's renowned papyrus collection. 7/9- 7/20	Polemos/Pulmus: Ways of Confrontation in Judaism, Paganism and Christianity in Late Antiquity A summer course offered by the Central European University (CEU) in Budapest, Hungary.The course aims at exploring the nature and various ways of confrontation between and within Early and Rabbinic Judaism, the Early Church, and Pagan religions and schools of thought. 7/15- 7/20	The 8th Congress of the Société d'Etudes Samaritaines will take place in Erfurt (Germany), jointly organized by the SÉS and the Martin-Luther-Universität Halle-Wittenberg, Faculty of Theology. The Congress of the SÉS meets every four years and is the most important meeting of experts working in the field of Samaritan studies worldwide. Lectures may deal with any aspect of the Samaritan community, their contemporary life and living conditions, their history, their religion and their laws, their literature and languages etc. Scholars who wish to give a paper at this conference are invited to submit their proposal before 2nd January 2012. The proposal should state the paper's topic, purpose, and main argu¬ments, to be evaluated for acceptance by the scientific committee of the conference.
