About SBL Members
Over 8,500 members from every continent provide a forum to test ideas and advance the understanding of the Bible's role in the public arena. Most members teach Bible at a public or private university or seminary but many are publishers, writers, librarians or have other careers.
Within the society, there are several groups with special focus, the Status of Women in the Profession Committee and the Underrepresented Racial and Ethnic Minorities in the Profession Committee as well as a Student Advisory Group.

See our Society News pages and the SBL Forum for more information on the activities of the society.

The generous contributions from our volunteer leaders, members, and friends are greatly appreciated.  Through your support the 2007 Society Fund was able to:

  • Award thirty travel grants to scholars from central and eastern Europe to attend the 2007 Vienna International Meeting, and eight travel grants to scholars from various under resourced countries to attend the 2007 Annual Meeting in San Diego.
  • Provide start-up costs of the International Cooperation Initiative working to promote the exchange of ideas, scholarship, and leadership between scholars in under-resourced regions of the world and North American and European scholars. We have initiated an aggressive publication of out-of-print volumes from other publishers as well as our own backlist.
  • Promote international cooperation for the benefit of all scholars, for example, the Codex Siniaticus Project.
  • Meet the needs of teachers in US public education who are developing Bible courses for ninth through twelfth grades
We thank our donors and volunteers for making these and other achievements possible.
