About SBL

The Society of Biblical Literature is the oldest and largest international scholarly membership organization in the field of biblical studies. Founded in 1880, the Society has grown to over 8,500 international members including teachers, students, religious leaders and individuals from all walks of life who share a mutual interest in the critical investigation of the Bible.

Requirements for Participation

Membership
  • SBL Membership is required at the time of a proposal
  • SBL Membership will be checked on June 15, 2004 and non-current members will be removed from the program at that time
  • SBL Membership must be current at time of Annual Meeting in November
  • AAR Membership is not sufficient for the SBL Program
Participation
  • Participation is limited to two appearance total
  • Presiding at a session counts as an appearance
  • Appearances on the AAR program count towards this total
  • SBL Committee and business sessions do not count towards this total
First Time Proposals
  • Members who have never read a paper at the Annual Meeting must submit the entire paper as a part of the proposal.
