CBA joins Online Books

SBL welcomes The Catholic Biblical Association of America as a new publishing partner in the International Cooperation Initiative (ICI) Online Books project. Joseph Jensen, CBA Executive Secretary, advised SBL of the decision August 27. CBA has provided PDF files of their most recent publications and we will begin to make them available in September. SBL has received thanks and appreciation from many people who have benefited from this program, and we are indeed happy to continue and expand Online Books through the addition of works from other academic publishers.

Regional Meetings

International Cooperation Initiative (ICI) Liaison Network

ICI is organizing a Liaison Network to promote awareness of the resources and opportunities made available through the ICI to scholars, teachers, and students. We have recently asked SBL members living in qualifying countries to become official ICI liaisons. Dr Nathaniel Levtow of the University of Montana, Missoula, (Nathaniel.Levtow@mso.umt.edu) has graciously offered to coordinate the efforts of the ICI Liaisons and has called for volunteers to act in this capacity. Over fifty people have already responded and volunteered their time to this endeavor. We invite others to join this initiative by contacting Dr. Levtow or SBL at sblservices@sbl-site.org.

Teaching the Bible Newsletter

After taking a summer break, the Teaching the Bible e-pub is back. See the September issue here.

ICI Mentoring Reminder

The academic year is beginning soon in many countries and it is a good time to make sure that students are aware of the mentoring opportunities available through the ICI. To view a list of scholars who have volunteered to be mentors, visit http://www.sbl-site.org/educational/ICIscholarList.aspx. And don’t forget, YOU can volunteer to be a mentor, too!

Bible Odyssey

This August SBL submitted to the National Endowment for the Humanities a grant to build a website for the general public, called Bible Odyssey (the previous working title was World of the Bible). In the past year SBL and an advisory team used an NEH planning grant to develop the site concept and a prototype design. (Stop by our table at the Annual meeting for a preview.)

The site will be a useful undergraduate classroom tool and will offer SBL members a chance to hone their public communication skills. We will hear from NEH about funding in April 2011. Interested or have questions about the project? Email: Odyssey@sbl-site.org
