About SBL Members
Over 8,000 members from every continent provide a forum to test ideas and advance the understanding of the Bible's role in the public arena. Most members teach Bible at a public or private university or seminary but many are publishers, writers, librarians or have other careers. SBL has a vibrant student membership. See their discussion list for information about their activities.

SBL invites all those who share in our mission to foster critical thinking and scholarship about biblical texts to join.

See our Society News pages and the SBL Forum for more information on the activities of the society.

Donate to SBL
The generous contributions from our volunteer leaders, members, and friends are greatly appreciated.  Through your support the Society Fund raised more than $73,600 in 2007 exceeding our goal by 22 percent.

Last year, SBL awarded thirty travel grants to scholars from central and eastern Europe to attend the Vienna International Meeting, and eight travel grants to scholars from various under resourced countries to attend the 2007 Annual Meeting in San Diego. The International Cooperation Initiative is working to promote the exchange of ideas, scholarship, and leadership between scholars in under-resourced regions of the world and North American and European scholars. More will be forthcoming on this mutually beneficial initiative.

We have totally revamped and updated our website with expanded resources. We have initiated an aggressive publication of out-of-print volumes from other publishers as well as our own backlist.  The availability of the Journal of Biblical Literature in digitally searchable form has increased.  We are directly involved with meeting the needs of teachers in public education who are developing Bible courses for ninth through twelfth grades

We thank our donors and volunteers for making these achievements possible
