Annual Meeting of the American Council of Learned SocieitiesAt this May 2-4 meeting, participants mourned the loss of the president of the ACLS, John D'Arms, celebrated his achievements, and considered the current status and prospects of the humanities in the United States. The interim president is Francis Oakley, President Emeritus of Williams College.
The office of the ACLS will be moving to permanent quarters in July. The rare opportunity to purchase space arose last year in the midst of conversations about a new lease.

Jaclyn L. Maxwell has also been awarded an ACLS Fellowship for her project on lay people and the Christianization of the Roman Empire.
Members of the SBL seeking funding for sabbatical leave should keep in mind the following ACLS Fellowships:
- ACLS Fellowships (up to $50,000 for full professors; up to $40,000 for Associate Professors; up to $30,000 for assistant professors).
- Charles A. Ryskamp Research Fellowships for advanced assistant professors ($60,000 plus a research fund and additional summer funding, if needed) Frederick Burkhardt Residential Fellowships for Associate Professors ($65,000).
