CSBS Awards
Five different awards were presented during the Annual Meeting of the Canadian Society of Biblical Studies (CSBS) at York University, Toronto, May 28-30. A description of each award, the criteria by which they are judged, and the individual winners appears below.
Two Student Essay Prizes were given for essays related to the field of Biblical Studies. Submissions must demonstrate graduate level research ability and show familiarity with the appropriate original languages and the modern languages of scholarly research. Special attention will be paid to clarity (the cogency with which the thesis of the paper is structured, articulated, developed, and defended) and originality (the contributions which the thesis makes to scholarship, e.g., by employing new methods, new comparisons and/or new bodies of evidence). Entries may be based upon work already completed at the graduate level and should be suitable for oral delivery at the Annual Meeting of the Society. The 2006 recipients are:
The Jeremias Prize: Sean A. Adams (adams.sean@gmail.com), McMaster University, "Luke's Preface and its Relationship to Greek Historiography"
The Founders Prize: Paul Evans (psevans@hotmail.com ), Wycliffe College, "Sennacherib's 701 Invasion into Judah: What Saith the Scriptures?"
The Norman W. Wagner Technology Award recognizes the innovative use of technology relating to biblical scholarship, which includes teaching, by a member of the CSBS. The award may honour a career contribution or a specific project. Emphasis will be given to pedagogical features such as educational and research potential, encouragement of critical thinking, user-involvement, facility of use, etc. The 2006 recipients are:
Ken Penner, Ian Scott and David Miller for their contribution to the field of Biblical Studies as the founders and Project Directors of The Online Critical Pseudepigrapha (http://www.uwo.ca/kings/ocp).
The Frank W. Beare Book Award recognizes an outstanding book in the areas of Christian Origins, Post-Biblical Judaism and/or Graeco-Roman Religions written by a member of the CSBS and published during the previous two years. The 2006 recipient is:
Alan Segal (asegal@barnard.edu), Life After Death: A History of the Afterlife in Western Religion (New York: Doubleday, 2004).
The R. B. Y. Scott Book Award recognizes an outstanding book in the areas of Hebrew Bible and/or the Ancient Near East written by a member of the CSBS and published during the previous two years. The 2006 recipient is:
Isaac Kalimi (kalimi@gmx.net), The Reshaping of Ancient Israelite History in Chronicles (Winona Lake, IN: Eisenbrauns, 2005).
