Old and New Observers Agree, "The Hills ARE Alive with the Sound of Music"Nature is still regarded with suspicion by some scholars, even within otherwise liberal Christian circles.1 As I explore nature is this paper, I want to acknowledge my debt to my current teacher of the Maori language, Victor Mokaraka, and to a non-Maori New Zealand philosopher, John Patterson, whose advocacy of Maori environmental values is both acute and compelling.
