The poet Czeslaw Milosz died at his home in Krakow on August 14, 2004. Born in Lithuania, raised in Vilna, Milosz received the Nobel Prize for literature in 1980. His poetry was only published in Poland after he received the Nobel Prize. Milosz worked within the Polish resistance during World War II; as a diplomat for the Polish communist government, he received political asylum from France in 1951. In 1960 he came to the University of Berkeley in California, where his last title was professor of Slavic languages and literature.
